Passport and Visa Requirements for Australian Travellers

Two pieces of paperwork stop trips before they start. A passport with less than six months left on it, and a visa nobody checked until the week of departure.

Both are avoidable, and both take longer to fix than most travellers assume.

Australian passport fees rose on 1 January 2026. The Australian Passport Office charges $422 for an adult passport and $213 for a child or senior passport.

Six weeks is the standard estimate and demand has stayed high, so peak periods run longer. Renewing the moment you book rather than the month you fly removes the risk and the $308 priority fee.

Many countries refuse entry to travellers whose passport expires within six months of arrival. The rule is set by the destination, not by Australia, and airline staff enforce it at check-in because the airline wears the cost of flying you home.

A passport that expires in four months is valid for travel to some places and useless for others. Check the requirement for your specific destination before you book, not after.

Australia itself has no such rule for returning citizens. Your passport needs to be valid for the period of your travel in and out of the country, which is why people are caught out: the outbound rule that matters is the destination's.

Start with Smartraveller, the Australian Government's own advice service, then confirm on the destination government's immigration site. Travel agents and airline websites carry summaries that go out of date.

Australian citizens hold visa-free or visa on arrival access to 182 countries and territories, which is why the question gets skipped. The exceptions include destinations Australians visit often, and several now require an electronic authorisation applied for days in advance rather than a visa on arrival.

Renew the passport when you book the trip, not when you pack. Six weeks is the working estimate and a peak period stretches it, so a trip booked three months out leaves no margin if the application needs anything corrected.

Apply for visas and electronic authorisations once the flights are confirmed. Many require your passport number, so the passport has to come first.

A passport with water damage, a torn page or a detached cover can be refused at the border even when the expiry date is fine. Border officials treat damage as a document integrity question rather than a cosmetic one.

Replacing a damaged passport costs the same as a renewal and takes the same six weeks. Check the condition of the document when you check the date.

Check the expiry date, add six months, and compare that against your return date. If it falls short, renew before you spend anything on the trip.

Then confirm the visa position on the destination government's own site. Those two checks take twenty minutes and remove the only two failures that cannot be fixed at the airport.
