Frequent Flyer Points Guide: Qantas, Velocity, and More

Australians hold over 30 million frequent flyer memberships. Qantas Frequent Flyer alone has more than 15 million members, making it the largest loyalty program in the country. Velocity Frequent Flyer trails with around 10 million members. Most people earn points but have no strategy for using them.

Points have different values depending on how you earn them and how you redeem them. A Qantas Point is worth 0.5 cents if you use it in the Qantas Store. That same point is worth 2 to 4 cents redeemed for business class flights. The gap between worst and best redemption is enormous. This guide covers the major programs available to Australian travellers and the strategies that extract the most value.

Qantas Frequent Flyer earns points through flights, credit cards, shopping partners, and everyday spending. You earn 5 Qantas Points per $1 on Qantas flights (economy), 1 point per $1 at Woolworths (via Everyday Rewards link), and 0.5 to 1.5 points per $1 on most partner credit cards.

Qantas offers two redemption types: Classic Flight Rewards and Points Plus Pay. Classic Flight Rewards use a fixed points table. Sydney to Melbourne in economy costs 8,000 points plus about $30 in taxes. Sydney to London in business class costs 144,600 points plus $300 to $500 in taxes and surcharges. Points Plus Pay lets you use any number of points as a discount on a revenue fare, but the value per point drops to around 0.5 to 0.7 cents.

Qantas status tiers (Silver, Gold, Platinum, Platinum One) are earned through Status Credits, not Qantas Points. You earn Status Credits from flying, not from credit card spending. Gold status requires 700 Status Credits in a membership year and gives you lounge access, priority check-in, and extra baggage allowance. Platinum requires 1,400 Status Credits.

Qantas Points expire after 18 months of no earning or redeeming activity. Any earn or redeem transaction resets the clock. A single Woolworths shop linked to Everyday Rewards keeps your points alive. Velocity Frequent Flyer is Virgin Australia's loyalty program. You earn Velocity Points on Virgin Australia flights, partner airlines (Singapore Airlines, United, Etihad), and transfer partners. Virgin Australia's domestic network covers most capital city routes, and Velocity often prices reward seats lower than Qantas for the same routes.

Velocity reward pricing uses a zone-based system. Sydney to Melbourne in economy costs 7,800 Velocity Points plus about $30 in taxes. That is 200 points less than the equivalent Qantas redemption. For international travel, Velocity partners with Singapore Airlines, giving you access to Singapore Airlines business and first class, which ranks among the best in the world.

Velocity's status tiers (Silver, Gold, Platinum) require Status Credits from flying. Gold status needs 500 Status Credits and opens Virgin Australia lounge access across Australia. Velocity Gold is easier to reach than Qantas Gold (500 vs 700 Status Credits), which makes it a common first-time status goal for Australian travellers.

Velocity Points also expire after 24 months of inactivity. That gives you a 6-month buffer over Qantas. Transfer partners include American Express Membership Rewards, Citi Rewards, and credit card programs from several banks.

Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer miles offer Australians access to Singapore Airlines' award-winning Suites and business class products. You earn KrisFlyer miles on Singapore Airlines flights departing from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, and Cairns. Credit card transfer partners include American Express Membership Rewards (at a 1:1 ratio on some cards) and Citi Rewards.

A Sydney to Singapore business class redemption costs 62,000 KrisFlyer miles. A Sydney to London via Singapore in business costs 113,000 miles. Singapore Airlines imposes low fuel surcharges compared to Qantas, so your out-of-pocket taxes stay under $150 for most routes.

Asia Miles (Cathay Pacific), Etihad Guest, and United MileagePlus also have Australian earn opportunities. Asia Miles partners with all three Qantas credit card issuing banks. Etihad Guest earns on Etihad flights from Sydney and Melbourne. United MileagePlus earns on Star Alliance flights, and you can transfer American Express points to United at 2:1.

United MileagePlus has a unique advantage for Australian travellers flying Star Alliance partners. United does not impose fuel surcharges on partner award tickets, unlike Qantas which adds substantial carrier charges to oneworld partner flights. A Sydney to London return on Singapore Airlines booked through United MileagePlus costs 160,000 miles round trip in business class with under $100 in taxes. The same routing booked through KrisFlyer costs 226,000 miles with $250 to $300 in taxes.

Cathay Pacific Asia Miles offers strong value on oneworld flights. Sydney to Hong Kong in business class costs 50,000 Asia Miles one way. Cathay's partner awards on Qantas domestic flights cost 10,000 Asia Miles for economy, matching Qantas pricing with lower taxes. Asia Miles do not expire, which removes the pressure to redeem before a deadline.

The American Express Qantas Ultimate Card earns 1.5 Qantas Points per $1 on everyday spending and 0.5 points per $1 on government transactions. It carries a $450 annual fee and includes a complimentary domestic Qantas flight each year. For high spenders putting $5,000+ per month through the card, the points earned outweigh the fee within a few months.

The Westpac Altitude Black Mastercard earns 1.2 Qantas Points per $1 (after transfer) and has broader acceptance than American Express. The $250 annual fee is lower, and Mastercard acceptance is near-universal in Australia. ANZ Frequent Flyer Black and NAB Qantas Signature both offer similar earn rates of 1 to 1.2 points per $1.

For Velocity earners, the American Express Velocity Platinum earns 1.25 Velocity Points per $1. The ANZ Rewards cards transfer to Velocity at competitive ratios. CommBank Awards cards can transfer to both Qantas and Velocity, giving you flexibility to choose the program with the best available redemption at the time.

Flexible rewards programs like American Express Membership Rewards and Citi Rewards let you transfer to multiple airlines. Amex MR transfers to Qantas, Velocity, KrisFlyer, Asia Miles, and Etihad Guest. This flexibility is valuable because you can wait for the best redemption opportunity across all partners instead of locking into one airline. Sign-up bonuses offer the fastest way to build a points balance. The American Express Qantas Ultimate Card offers 130,000 bonus Qantas Points when you spend $3,000 in the first 3 months. That single bonus equals 16 domestic return flights in economy on Classic Rewards. Check the annual fee, minimum spend requirement, and whether you can downgrade or cancel after the first year.

Points caps limit how many points you earn per statement period on some cards. The ANZ Frequent Flyer Black caps bonus points at $2,500 in spending per statement period. Redeem for long-haul business and first class. Paying cash for a Sydney to London business class ticket costs $8,000 to $12,000. Redeeming 144,600 Qantas Points for the same seat gives you a value of 5 to 8 cents per point. Redeeming for a $100 gift card gives you 0.5 cents per point. The math favours premium cabin redemptions by a factor of 10.

Book early. Both Qantas and Velocity release reward seats about 353 days before departure. The best seats, especially business class on popular routes, fill within days of release. Set calendar reminders for the booking window on your target travel dates.

Stack earning methods. Link your Qantas Frequent Flyer number to Woolworths Everyday Rewards, Qantas Shopping online mall, and a Qantas-earning credit card. A $200 online purchase through the Qantas Shopping portal earns portal bonus points (2 to 10 per $1), plus credit card points (1 to 1.5 per $1), plus any retailer loyalty points. Triple-dipping is the fastest way to build a balance.

Avoid low-value redemptions. Qantas and Velocity both operate online stores where you can spend points on electronics, wine, and gift cards. The value per point in these stores ranges from 0.4 to 0.7 cents, roughly one-fifth of business class flight value. Use cash for everyday purchases. Save points for flights.

Status gives you tangible benefits beyond the flying experience. Lounge access saves money on food and drinks at the airport. Priority boarding gets you overhead bin space. Extra baggage saves $50 to $100 per checked bag on international flights. Upgrade priority puts you at the front of the standby list.

Reaching Gold status requires 10 to 15 return domestic flights per year, depending on fare class and route distance. Business travellers who fly Sydney to Melbourne weekly hit Gold within 3 to 4 months. Leisure travellers who fly 4 to 6 times per year will struggle to reach Gold without status runs (booking cheap flights purely for Status Credits).
